In early Days the webmaster’s doing site wide link exchange with the website. These site wide links are generally found near the site copyright line or the footer of the web pages. These links are supposed to be related to the content of the website but many a times they are not related. If the site wide links are not related, then they look like spam.

Site wide links have lost the value which they used to have earlier. If the site wide link is related to the content of the webpage, then the traffic to your webpage is increased and thus the page ranking of your website also increases. But unrelated links affects your website ranking adversely.
